Brussels approves the sale of domestic cricket as food in the EU

The European Commission authorized on Friday, February 11th, the sale of the domestic cricket (‘Acheta domesticus’) as food, becoming the third insect to be approved for human consumption after last May’s approval of the sale of the mealworm and the migratory locust.

This measure was taken after the European Food Safety Agency determined that this arthropod is “safe” for human consumption and can be marketed frozen, dried or in powdered form in European Union countries.
